Practice 3
Task 2: Simulated situational conversation.
A:I've been looking forward to visiting your factory.
B:Actually, you'll know our products better after the visit. I'll show you around and explain the operation as we go along.
A:That'll be most helpful.
B:Maybe we could start with the Design Department. And then we could look at the production line.
A:How much do you spend on design development every year?
B:About 3%-4% of the gross sales.
A:That's fine. Could I have a look over the manufacturing process?
B:Of course. This way, please.
(They are on the way to the production line.)
B:This is the assembly line. These drawings on the wall are process sheets. They describe how each process goes on to the next.
A:How many workers are there on the lines?
B:About 60. But we are running on two shifts. And everyday, 1,400 motorcars are assembled.
A:Oh, it's highly efficient.
B:Yes, this assembly line was built recently. Almost every process is computerized. Thus, the efficiency is greatly raised, and the process becomes less labour-intensive.
A:How do you control the quality of the products?
B:Well, all products have to go through five checks in the whole process. We believe that the quality is the soul of an enterprise. Therefore, we always put quality as the first consideration.
A:Yes, quality is even more important than quantity.
B:That's right.
A:I hope my visit does not cause you too much trouble.
B:No trouble at all. Shall we rest a while and have a cup of tea before going around?
A:That's fine.
